Content

This course deals with the basic concepts of industrial economics. The strategic behaviour of companies is examined with the help of theoretical models.

The following core topics are discussed:

  •     Monopoly: one good, several goods, price discrimination
  •     Static oligopoly: price competition (Bertrand), quantity competition (Cournot), differentiated goods (Hotelling and Salop), capacity constraints
  •     Dynamic oligopoly: collusion, varying demand, unobservable deviations

Competences and intended learning outcomes

On successful completion of the module, students will be able to

  •     Recommend courses of action for companies.
  •     assess the strategic behaviour of companies.
  •     evaluate non-competitive markets.
  •     contrast different market forms
