Special issue of the JSCM on ‘Transformation and Technology’ published and freely accessible

The special issue of the Journal of Competences, Strategy & Management entitled ‘Transformation & Technology’ is dedicated to the far-reaching changes that technological innovations are bringing about in our society and in organisations in particular. In a series of articles, Gordon Müller-Seitz and his colleagues Anja Danner-Schröder, Martin Gersch, Wolfgang H. Güttel and Ann-Christine Schulz shed light on how technologies such as artificial intelligence and digitalisation are revolutionising the working environment and increasingly merging human and machine decision-making processes. The term ‘orgachines’ is introduced to describe hybrid systems in which human and machine intelligence work together in a symbiotic way. The articles examine the opportunities and challenges of this development, such as the stability and changeability of organisational routines through automation and augmentation, as well as the need for an ethical framework to ensure fairness and transparency in AI-driven decision-making processes. Case studies, such as the introduction of AI-based diagnostic procedures in the medical environment, illustrate how ‘situated truths’ are created through the collaboration of humans and machines. It also emphasises the need to adapt the traditional resource-based model of corporate governance, as the focus is now on dynamic adaptation and short-term competitiveness rather than long-term stability. Finally, the issue addresses the challenges of digital transformation for social movements and the role of information and communication technologies in collective action. The publication aims to provide a comprehensive picture of the current debates and practical implications of digital transformation and thus represents an important contribution to the academic discussion on the future direction of organisations and their strategic management approaches.
