Master Studies

In the courses for master's students, we focus on fostering understanding as well as critical reflection of current research as well illustrating the practical applicability of what has been studied - beyond the specific issue at hand. Especially against the backdrop of the increasing digitalization of accounting, students will learn how to improve accounting-information based judgement and decision-making. The practical applicability is additionally bolstered by frequent insights from practitioners.

The courses offered by the chair are part of the major "Financial Management and Accounting".

The core course of the Chair of Accounting in the Master's program is the course International Financial Reporting for Decision-Makers, in which studentsare taught a comprehensive understanding of reporting according to the IFRS and the relevance of these regulations for management control. The course consists of a weekly lecture and an exercise session every other week.

In addition, the Chair offers the new course Sustainability Accounting and Accountability. Among others, the course deals with the reporting and measurement of sustainability aspects and thus addresses a very timely topic that is becoming increasingly important for companies as well as their stakeholders.

Starting next winter term, the Chair will also be offering the new course Group Accounting, which deals with the specific requirements and challenges of group-level accounting.

Finally, a lecturer at the Chair of Accounting offers the course Valuation in the Master's program, in which the students deal with topics of firm valuation and -analysis in a practice-oriented manner by working on a case study.

Our Master's program is complemented by Master's theses and a Master's seminar "New Technology and Current Trends in Accounting". In this seminar, students intensively study relevant literature on highly relevant topics, sharpen their skills in scientific research processes and eventually develop a proposal to answer a research question that they have worked out themselves. It is recommended to participate in the master's seminar to be well-prepared for writing a master's thesis at the department.

The major "Financial Management and Accounting" is offered in cooperation with the Chair of Financial Management(Prof. Dr. Vitor Azevedo).

Please note:

  • Students in the study programs BWL, BWLtQ and WI according to the new examination regulations (4-semesters) need 22 ECTS to complete the major.
  • Students in WI according to the old examination regulations (3 semesters) need 13 ECTS to complete the major.
  • Of these, 4 ECTS are allotted to the master's seminar, which must be completed either at the Chair of Accounting or at the Chair of Financial Management.

The overview above shows the courses of the major. For the seminar, you have to choose between Accounting and Finance. We are continuously working on the expansion of the program. If you intend to choose the major "Controlling" as well, then you should take alternative courses instead of "Anwendung von Controlling-Instrumenten I & II". In this case, please contact us directly.

You can also complete courses within the University of the Greater Region. A short guide from a student who did this successfully can be found here.
