DRK Kreisverband Kaiserslautern-Stadt e.V.
Problem definition
The Gemeinschaftsunterkunft Post (GU Post) is a shelter opened in Kaiserslautern in 2015 that offers refugees a home for the duration of their asylum procedure. The tasks of the GU Post also include social support, assistance with bureaucratic processes, general advice and psychological support. An essential component for the success of a shelter such as the GU Post is the voluntary commitment of the population, which has, however, decreased significantly in recent years. One possible reason for this is the reduced media presence of the issue and the associated weakened perception of the urgency of the challenge.
Objective
- Planning and implementation of a media-effective corporate volunteering event.
- Development of a corporate volunteering concept for the GU Post of the DRK Kreisverband Kaiserslautern-Stadt e.V. to increase volunteering; preferably with regard to trainees.
Approach
First, the students sat down with Erhard Ploch, the volunteer coordinator at GU Post, to discuss possible starting points. After a detailed brainstorming session, the decision was ultimately made to plan and hold an event that would offer refugees the opportunity to integrate into the job market in the long term. As part of this event, the refugees had the chance to make contact with regional companies and introduce themselves.
During the planning of the event, the students were mainly involved in acquiring potential companies and were ultimately able to win over two companies to take part in the event. In addition, the students tried to find additional sponsors for the catering on the evening of the event and were able to convince the Burgschänke in Kaiserslautern of their concept.
Stefanie Lenz, representing the IHK, also presented the IHK competence check at the event, which is intended to give refugees the opportunity to show what they can do and have this officially confirmed.
