The 17 Sustainable Development Goals are at the heart of the Sustainable Development Agenda adopted by the United Nations in 2015. These are important for non-profit organizations (NPOs), among others, to measure their social and environmental impact. However, companies are also increasingly required to measure and report their sustainability performance, particularly due to current EU regulation, including the Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive (CSRD). ESG (Environmental, Social, Governance) criteria are also becoming increasingly important, as investors prefer sustainable investments. From a scientific perspective, innovative solutions must also be developed to support sustainable development goals and transfer knowledge into practice.
Measuring sustainability performance is associated with a number of challenges. A key difficulty is the complexity and scope of the sustainability agenda, which encompasses many different aspects such as environmental protection, social responsibility and responsible organizational management. Other challenges include the lack of uniform standards and methods for measuring sustainability performance, the availability of data and its quality, and the fact that the implementation of sustainability goals often requires additional resources and investment. Despite these challenges, measuring sustainability performance is essential - not only to comply with legal regulations, but also to meet the growing demands of stakeholders and ensure long-term competitiveness.
The "Sustainability Impact Summit" offers a platform to discuss these challenges with experts from practice, science and business under the motto "Make it measurable, show impact!" and to exchange insights and best practices on measuring sustainability performance.
